The Institute of Arts: National Saturday Club Gets Underway

January 18, 2022

Last weekend saw the start of the new term for The Institute of Arts' National Saturday Club.

A total of 15 students attended the introductory session into fine art, which was run by Chris Wiles, Lynne Bennett and Dom Heffer from the Ferens art gallery. The students participated in an experimental drawing workshop, which saw them tasked with producing self-portraits with their eyes closed.

The workshop was followed by a trip to the Ferens to look at portraiture and unseen work in the gallery's stores, with the rare opportunity to access the vault proving to be an exciting experience for the students.

The National Saturday Club is a UK-wide network, supported by Arts Council England and the Department for Education, which is open to students if all abilities aged 13–16 - in particular those who may face additional barriers to success.

Each year, the programme gives 1,500 young people the unique opportunity to study subjects they love for free on Saturday mornings, with a focus on helping to build skills and confidence as well as demonstrating pathways to further study and careers.

The club will run until the end of May, culminating in a national exhibition of student work held in London.
